A man who stabbed nine people at a toddler’s birthday party in Boise killing the 3-year-old birthday girl and leaving several others gravely injured will spend the rest of his life in prison for the crimes.  Timmy Kinner was sentenced to two life terms in prison plus another 120 years yesterday.

The Pocatello Chief Financial officer resigned yesterday following a heated discussion on the last day of budget meetings.  The resignation followed a tense exchange between the mayor and members of the city council.  CFO Jim Krugger said the mayor’s treatment of the council prompted his decision to quit.  It’s the second time in two years that the city’s CFO has resigned in the middle of budget talks.

Summer school is returning to many districts to help students catch up following the pandemic.  The Cassia county school district is now a full program.  In the past years the district offered limited summer school to migrant programs or after school programs.  840 students have signed up.

Idaho has been awarded $30.7 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to address health disparities during the coronavirus pandemic.   The money is part of the $2.25 billion in supplementary funding previous approved by Congress. The money is intended to improve COVID-19 testing and contact tracing for at-risk populations, improve state and local health department services and address health disparities related to the pandemic.

Idaho’s most popular state parks started doubling camping fees for out-of-state residents yesterday thanks to a new state law.  Still, it will take at least a year to see if the move intended to help more Idaho residents get spots in the parks will have the desired effect. That’s because the state’s five most-popular parks were fully booked for the summer as soon as reservations opened up back in December.

Tonight signals the beginning of Filer Fun Days.  Tonight it’s a fish fry at the fairgrounds.  Tomorrow it’s a parade and the 5K and Fun run, pancake breakfast and live music.  The parade begins at 11.  A Firework show is set for tomorrow evening.

More players are leaving the Boise State Football team.  Two this week bring the total to five since the 2020 season ended.  Freshman cornerback Donovan Clark is no longer on the roster. Freshman defensive end Amari Williams announced on Twitter that he is transferring. The Broncos’ coaching staff has been busy adding cornerbacks to the roster, including Utah State transfer Jared Reed.

The College Football Playoff may be expanding, which could be big news for teams in Group of Five conferences, such as the Mountain West.  The playoff could expand from four teams to 12.

The Northwest Nazarene baseball team’s historic run to the NCAA Division II Championships came to an end in a 5-3 loss to defending national champion Tampa.  The Nighthawks finished the season 35-10, captured their second regular-season GNAC title and second GNAC tournament title in Cary, North Carolina.

Kaitlin Burgess will join the Boise State women’s basketball program this fall after playing two seasons at the College of Southern Idaho.  This past season, the Auckland, New Zealand, native earned NJCAA All-America Third Team accolades as well as All-Region 18 First Team and Region 18 Tournament MVP honors.
